Certification
New professional opportunities for substance use disorder counselors (substance abuse counselors) are among the fastest growing in the United States, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting much higher than average demand through 2022. In this environment, current and aspiring addiction counselors and other healthcare professionals can enhance their career prospects by completing specialized training and certification in the field.
The UF College of Medicine’s Graduate Certificate in Addiction and Recovery is designed to equip students with the knowledge and competencies required for success on state, national and international substance use disorder counselor (substance abuse counselor) certification exams, including the Certified Addiction Professional (CAP), Certified Master’s Level Addiction Professional (MCAP) and Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) exams administered by the Florida Certification Board (FCB). The UF program is not affiliated with the FCB.
Please note that completing the UF Addition and Recovery online graduate certificate does not automatically give students a board certification credential. What students earn is a graduate academic credential from the University of Florida. Board certifications have additional requirements that students will need to meet after they complete our program, including gaining hours of on-the-job experience and taking a certification examination.
The FCB’s CAP and MCAP certifications include the requirements of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC)’s Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) credential. The FCB also allows CAC candidates to earn the IC&RC ADC through additional training and work experience hours. Individuals considering relocation should investigate reciprocity of their credential before moving.
