The University of Florida College of Medicine’s online Graduate Certificate in Addiction and Recovery can be completed in as little as one year. Position yourself for success with specialized training in addiction evaluation, counseling and treatment from a top addiction program and university.

The UF online addiction certificate is designed and taught by experts in the addiction division of the University of Florida College of Medicine, one of the largest addiction research, training, treatment and education programs nationally. The program provides current and aspiring addiction professionals and substance use disorder counselors (substance abuse counselors) the opportunity to train with UF addiction experts in a flexible and engaging distance learning environment.

Our online graduate addiction certificate curriculum reflects current research and clinical practice standards. It spans a broad range of topics, including:

  • Neurobiology of addiction
  • Evaluation and treatment of substance use disorders
  • Establishment and financing of treatment programs
  • Professional ethics with respect to substance use disorders

The program can help students take a significant step toward becoming a substance use disorder counselor (substance abuse counselor) by fulfilling educational requirements needed to pursue addiction counselor certifications offered by several external boards. Covering all the federally recommended knowledge and competency areas required for addiction counselors and professionals, the program serves as a valuable part of your preparation process for local, state and national substance use disorder counselor (substance abuse counselor) certification exams, such as those offered by the Florida Certification Board for attaining Certified Addiction Professional (CAP) and Certified Master’s Level Addiction Professional (MCAP) status.

Certification

New professional opportunities for substance use disorder counselors (substance abuse counselors) are among the fastest growing in the United States, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics projecting much higher than average demand through 2022. In this environment, current and aspiring addiction counselors and other healthcare professionals can enhance their career prospects by completing specialized training and certification in the field.

The UF College of Medicine’s Graduate Certificate in Addiction and Recovery is designed to equip students with the knowledge and competencies required for success on state, national and international substance use disorder counselor (substance abuse counselor) certification exams, including the Certified Addiction Professional (CAP), Certified Master’s Level Addiction Professional (MCAP) and Certified Addiction Counselor (CAC) exams administered by the Florida Certification Board (FCB). The UF program is not affiliated with the FCB.

Please note that completing the UF Addition and Recovery online graduate certificate does not automatically give students a board certification credential. What students earn is a graduate academic credential from the University of Florida. Board certifications have additional requirements that students will need to meet after they complete our program, including gaining hours of on-the-job experience and taking a certification examination.

The FCB’s CAP and MCAP certifications include the requirements of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC)’s Alcohol and Drug Counselor (ADC) credential. The FCB also allows CAC candidates to earn the IC&RC ADC through additional training and work experience hours. Individuals considering relocation should investigate reciprocity of their credential before moving.
